Project Water Distiller
Water distiller
The device is created for water disinfection and desalination through evaporation from the bottom part and subsequent condensation in the middle.
Water heating happens through concentrating sunrays on the body of the device.
You can see grid component in action in this video. [6.95 MB, Flash Player required]
Distinctive features
The device is passive, so does not require additional electricity costs.
The method of obtaining clean water is environmentally friendly, since the process uses the energy of a natural source – i.e. the sun.
The cost of the device is minimal.
The device is made of anodized aluminium and a special separation grid which allows water vapour to pass through but at the same time keeps the drops from getting into contaminated water.
During simple boiling of water, there is no reaction with chemicals that can be dangerous.
Components
The device consists of 3 components, assembled into one article.
- Lower part is the container, where water is being collected directly from the source – i.e. river, sea or any other sources.
- Middle part – serves as a container of purified water and contains membranous grid that serves for letting vapour through and concentrating pure water in water-collecting notches.
- Top lid – serves for water drops condensation and the formation of collection point, might be used as a “freezer” as well.
Principle of operation
1. Filtration
Draw water from the source into the lower part of the device, set up the upper parts. Place the device in the solar hub. Adjust the position so that the device would face the sun and collect the maximum amount of light. The water is heated under the influence of the sun, then it turns into the vapour and after passing through a membrane grid it condenses on the lid. After the drops are formed, they fall into the clean water collector under the influence of gravitation.
2. Water obtaining
After 2 hours remove the device from the hub. Use hands protection since the body of the device is hot. Remove the lid and the middle part. Drain the water from the middle part.
The device diagram is shown in Figure 2.
Principle of operation is shown in Figure 3.
The use of a membrane grid is a new technology that can improve the quality and performance of other systems. This technology lets the steam but not the water pass through the grid that is couple of millimetres thick. Moreover, any membrane can be made with such properties.
Also, this technology can be used for filtering water impurities in oil mixtures, diesel fuel and other oils.
